What to Wear to a Wedding as a Guest
Being a guest has one rule that outranks every trend: you should look considered, and you should not pull attention away from the couple. Everything else — length, colour, fabric — follows from the invitation.
Start with the dress code on the invitation
Black tie means floor-length, or a very formal midi in a fabric that reads rich — satin, silk, velvet. Cocktail is the most common wording and the most misread: it means a midi or a knee-length dress, structured rather than casual. Semi-formal or garden party gives you room for print and lighter fabric.
If the invitation says nothing, look at the venue. A ballroom asks for more than a vineyard.

Colours to avoid, and why
White, ivory, cream and anything close to them belong to the bride — this still holds even when the bride wears colour. Very bright red can also read as attention-seeking in photographs where the couple is the subject. Everything else is open: deep green, burgundy, navy, black (yes, black is fine at most modern weddings), and prints.
Our floral pieces are the easy answer for daytime, and evening dresses cover the formal end.

Let the season do half the work
Summer: lighter fabrics, print, midi length. Autumn and winter: deeper colours, sleeves or a jacket you can keep on indoors, closed shoes. In Calgary and Edmonton that last point is not a style note — it is a comfort one.
The practical checks people forget
- Can you sit through dinner in it? A bodice that is fine standing can be unbearable after two hours at a table.
- Can you walk on grass? Outdoor ceremonies and thin heels do not agree.
- Will it photograph? Very shiny fabrics can flare under flash; matte satin behaves better.
- Do you need to raise your arms? Dancing is part of the evening.
