Manitoba has an event no other province has, and a winter that tests everything you own. Both change what a dress has to do here. Everything ships from our Calgary warehouse and stays inside Canada — no customs, no duty.

01 · Delivery

To Winnipeg and the region

Orders are picked and packed by hand in Calgary, usually the same day they arrive. Each dress travels flat in tissue inside a rigid box — a velvet pile crushes if it is folded any other way — and the tracking number reaches you by email the moment the parcel is handed over. Nothing crosses a border on the way.

02 · The social

The social is its own dress code

For anyone who did not grow up here: a Manitoba social is a pre-wedding fundraiser held in a community hall. Cash bar, a prize table, a hundred and fifty people who half know each other, and dancing until whenever it ends.

It is not a rehearsal dinner and it is not the wedding. Dressing it like either one is the mistake people make once.

01

Something you can dance in for four hours

Not a figure of speech. Movement in the skirt, no lining that sticks, nothing you have to keep adjusting between songs.

02

A bodice that stays put

Strapless is possible but only if it genuinely fits — otherwise a strap, a sleeve, or proper boning that grips instead of slipping.

03

A hem a crowded hall can’t stand on

Floor length in a packed hall means somebody’s heel going through it before midnight. Above the ankle, every time.

04

Save the floor length for the wedding

The social is the loud night; the wedding is the formal one. Two events, two dresses, and everyone in the hall knows the difference.

02b · Winter

A winter with no compromise in it

Minus thirty with wind is not a styling problem, it is a structural one. What matters is how the dress comes out from under the coat.

Holds up under a coat

Velvet, heavy satin, dense crepe

  • Comes out uncreasedWeight and pile recover from being compressed for a twenty-minute drive. You arrive looking like you left.
  • Warm enough to matterVelvet does the work of a layer, so the coat comes off at the door and stays off.
  • Handles staticDry indoor air is the other half of a prairie winter. Heavier cloth simply does not cling the way fine synthetics do.
Doesn’t

Fine chiffon, thin jersey, unlined synthetics

  • Creases in the carTwenty minutes folded under a parka and the skirt keeps the shape of the seatbelt all evening.
  • Static, immediatelyThe skirt stops hanging and starts following the leg the moment you step inside.
  • No warmth at allWhich means the wrap never comes off, and the dress you chose is under it all night.
03 · The calendar

What Winnipeg dresses for

Three separate wardrobes, not one: the hall on a Friday night, a summer that has to hold every wedding of the year, and five months when the coat decides what works.

Year round

Socials

The Friday night institution: a hall, a cash bar, a prize table and four hours of dancing. More of them in a Manitoba year than weddings, and a different dress entirely.

June — September

Weddings

Assiniboine Park, lake weekends at Victoria Beach, halls out in the country. Short season, long evenings, and mosquitoes that make a sleeve worth considering.

November — March

Winter formals

Galas, holiday parties and the long cold half of the year. The coat is not optional, so the dress has to come out from under it looking untouched.

05 · Fit

Getting the size right the first time

There is no fitting room here, so measurements do the work. It takes ten minutes and saves a return.

For corset and bustier styles the deciding measurement is underbust, not bust — a boned bodice has almost no give and has to sit correctly vertically as well.

Still unsure? Send your measurements and the dress you are considering to info@the-clipse.com — we answer with an honest recommendation, including when the answer is that neither size will work.

  1. Measure over bare skin or thin underwear, wearing the bra you plan to wear with the dress — a padded bra moves the bust measurement by several centimetres.
  2. Take four numbers: bust, underbust, waist and hips. Keep the tape level all the way round; the usual mistake is letting it ride up at the back.
  3. Match them to the size chart, which maps our sizes to US, UK and EU equivalents.
  4. Between two sizes, size up on anything structured. A seam can be taken in; fabric cannot be added.
06 · Questions

Frequently asked

How long does delivery to Winnipeg take?
Three to five business days by tracked courier after dispatch. Orders are processed Monday to Friday, so an order placed on Friday evening leaves on Monday.
Is there any duty or customs charge?
No. Orders ship from our Calgary warehouse and stay inside Canada, so nothing goes through customs and no brokerage fee applies.
How much is shipping?
Free on orders over $250, flat $21 below that. The exact amount is shown at checkout before you pay.
What should I wear to a social?
Something you can dance in for four hours, with a bodice that stays where you put it and a hem a crowded hall cannot stand on. A well-cut mini or a short midi is the standard answer. Save the floor-length dress for the wedding itself.
Do you deliver to Steinbach and Selkirk?
Yes, on the same terms as the city — the same goes for St. Vital, Transcona, Charleswood and Headingley.
What if it doesn’t fit?
Returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery. Items must be unworn, with tags attached and in original packaging. Email us with your order number and we reply with instructions.
